Avril was born with a song in her heart. She has a beautiful singing voice and is an accomplished pianist.  She’s been sharing her gifts and talents at Union Church since 2007 when her husband, Ray, was called to be the pastor.  Pastor Ray retired in 2015, and Avril continued to do the contemporary part of the worship service, and program the music, until they left for a 6-month ministry in England.  She agreed to accept the Music Director position when Cliff Wood retired in January 2018, after many, many years.  Avril enjoys using her music skills to serve the Lord and the people at Union.  “I love creating music programs with a flow and thematic element that draws the congregation into worship,” says Avril. “Music is mentioned many times in Scripture as a way of expressing our love for God, and music will be part of our heavenly experience.”

Avril loves the Word of God and has been leading and teaching women’s Bible Study since her arrival at Union.  Behind the scenes, she is a kind and caring friend to many.  And, if she has spare time, she loves reading, all things British, and gardening.  She and Ray have been married for 48 years.  They both love England, have traveled there many times, and been blessed to live and minister there for several years.

Ray and Avril have two children.  Lindsay and her husband, Sean, live in Bridgeport; son Jeremy and his family live in North Carolina.  Five-year-old granddaughter, Lucy, fancies herself a princess; and, besides dressing up in her numerous princess outfits and acting out their stories, “she’s pretty good at whacking a tennis ball over the net, even though the racket is as big as she is,” says Avril!  When they can’t be in North Carolina with this little girl they adore, they use FaceTime to stay in touch.  Union Church feels blessed to have had Ray and Avril for a season.    While they seek the Lord for any future plans, they continue to serve faithfully among us.
